At first glance, this design looks paradoxical: How can the sculptor and the sculpture be the same person?

That paradox is the point. It communicates this truth - You are both the raw material and the craftsman. Many live as if they are only the stone, passively shaped by culture, peers, appetite, circumstance. This design rejects that. It depicts self-authorship (under direct guidance by God).

The sculptor uses an Iron chisel to unveil himself, with a will as tough as Iron. His will is sharpened by his efforts, hence the phrase Iron Sharpens Iron. Pain is proof of precision.
